Carnival
- A History of the Traveling Show (2 hrs.)
A two-hour rollicking
documentary adventure into the exuberance of the medieval
and modern traveling shows of jugglers, acrobats, troubadours,
minstrels, holy roller and side show freaks. Infused with
a tone of mischief and humour, Carnival combines the scholarly
with the vernacular.
To be shot in England, France, Germany,
America and Canada.
DIXIELAND
- Adventures in a Burlesque Museum (1 hr.)
This one-hour verite documentary
will travel to the middle of the Mojave Desert, 3 hours
west of Las Vegas, where 77-year-old former Minsky stripper
Dixie Evans runs the world's only burlesque museum. Around
her swirls all the magic and memories of a bygone era.
Charming, raunchy and garish,
DIXIELAND is a story of the unfailing show biz friendships.
For while Dixie struggles to collect photos and trinkest
for her museum, she also collects the old and broken strippers
strewn along the path of stardom. A surprising, heart-warming
tale that challenges ideas about age, class and morality.
ROADSIDE
CHEESE: The Wacky World of Highway Attractions (13 x 1/2
hrs.)
You just can't resist
those cheesy roadside attractions - always the WORLD'S
BIGGEST ball of string, the world's biggest frying pan,
fire hydrant, thermometer, dinosaur - monuments to the
hugeness of human achievement and imagination. This documentary
road movie will take an open-hearted, fun loving journey
across North America and Europe. For at the edges of highways,
are the small town characters and good neighbours that
assure an audience that life remains safe, surprising
and ultimately familiar.
HOUSEWIVES:
A Kitchen View of The 20th Century (2 hrs.)
Combining social anthropology
with tongue in cheek, Housewives explores the shifting
view of housewives. From the Victorian culture of domestic
bliss to the near-psychopahty of modern multi-tasking
motherhood, Housewives leads us through the stations of
women's resurrection at the altar of chauvinism and terror.
Spanning a century, the
film will be shot in Canada, Britain and the United States
and will examine the fads and fancies of the home front
that led to the re-writing of our public and private lives.
Moms
on the Run : A Documentary Escape Series (13 x 1/2 hrs.)
Two over-forty year old women, both well-lived
and with vivid pasts, park the kids, chuck the spouses
and head out in a trailer home to meet a world of women
who have re-invented themselves after raising their own
children. Part road movie, part anthropology, Moms on
the Run will be smart, curious, irreverent programming
that celebrates and sends up female possibilities and
middle age with a knowing wink.
Renegades
: A Salute to Sexual Pioneers (6 x 1/2 hrs.)
A cheeky celebration of
those brave souls who crashed through the gates of propriety
to open up a forum for public sexuality. An entertaining,
non-judgmental exploration of the exotic and erotic works
of minds who defied convention and dared to live by their
own authenticity and libidinous imagination. Subjects
include: Mae West, Tallulah Bankhead, Geoffrey Chaucer,
Mata Hari, Anais Nin, Josephine Baker, Clara Bow, Sher
Hite, Xaviera Hollander, Henry Miller, Billy Minsky, Mae
West, ect.
